A gorgeous seven week old grey seal pup was rescued from Newquay Harbour mid January 2009. He was obviously distressed as he was trying to escape from the sea , hauling out up the beach and had sustained injuries to his rear flippers and had breathing difficulties. After careful observation from a distance it was apparent that he needed help and the Gweek Seal Sanctuary were contacted for advise. They quickly organised rescue in the form of a volunteer local veterinary nurse and vet who expertly removed the seal (we nicknamed Jimmy) to West Hatch, where he is still recovering! We hope he will recover quickly and be able to return to the wild.
If you ever spot a seal you think maybe in distress:
keep your ditance
do not handle it
do not try to return to the sea
don't ignore the situation
observe it for injuries or signs of difficulties in breathing (from a safe distance)and
contact the seal sanctuary on 01326 221361

Thanks to Ken for his words on the harbour, but can I just say that there is a whole lot more going on at the harbour than is mentioned.Fishing is most definately NOT a thing of the past and there is a thriving community of some 25 commercial fishing boats, mainly concentrating on catching some of the finest crabs and lobsters caught in the U.K. Alongside these there are many angling charter boats, Passenger boats and speedboats and of course our own Diving Boat, from which we also run Eco-Wildlife Trips to include cage diving with blue sharks and seals and snorkelling with basking sharks. Some of the angling boats (including us) operate all year round as do the Gig rowers who have a busy training schedule.
We work closely with the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Cornwall Seal Group, Blue Reef Aquarium, and Shark Cornwall to bring you closer to the marine, and bird wildlife in and around Newquay Bay.
